These days, in the television world, we have to filter out what we want to watch and what we don't want to watch. I understand that this can be a difficult task, so I have some tips on helping you sort through this mass of entertainment.
1. Stick to channels you are familiar with. If for some reason you decide to be spontaneous and watch something on a channel you aren't acquainted with, don't be surprised if the 'shows' are hour-long infomercials about the SlapChop or a bunch of people in their mid-forties trying to sell you fake jewelry for twelve easy payments of $29.99.
2. Just by looking at the title of the show, it is easy to determine if the program will be good entertainment or not. If the title includes words such as 'Jersey', 'housewives', 'brides', or 'clean with', or is a stupid play on words, it'll probably suck. BUT, if you feel like laughing at people's stupidity, go right ahead and watch. Otherwise, if you're looking for quality television, look elsewhere.
3. Avoid the Disney channel at all costs.
4. When watching a show, ask yourself these questions: "What is the point of this program?" "What can I learn from this program?" "What quality of entertainment does this program offer?" "Are they trying to sell me anything?" If you answer, "I don't know," to the first three questions, and "Yes," to the fourth, you should probably turn to something else.
5. Anything from Discovery, Animal Planet, Current, Cartoon Network, G4, and Spike is worth watching. SyFy depends on if it's a B-rated 'horror' movie or not, and truTV is a little iffy unless you enjoy watching programs about car repossesion, pawn shops, high-speed chases, or lesser-known celebrities making fun of viral videos.
6. If the program features people with orange skin, midgets, ridiculously large families, or drug addicts, turn the channel.
7. Avoid the Disney channel at all costs.
Using these methods, I hope you can find programs that enrich your brain while providing you with some good entertainment. If you do follow these steps and find that you don't enjoy the programs I helped you find, then you're probably some generic suburban white kid with no taste for entertainment.
Adios, suckers.
